Ghana Maintains 5th Place Among African IMF Debtors

Ghana has kept it’s position as the 5th largest borrower from the  International Monetary Fund (IMF) in African  as of August,2025, with an outstanding debt of about  2.707 billion SDRs. Ghana entered a $3billion IMF program in 2023 to stabilise the economy after a severe financial crisis and so far, it has received $2.3 billion from the facility.
In July 2025, the IMF released another $367 million under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) after completing the 4th review.  The current government of Ghana has launched a national dialogue to review the IMF agreement and also find ways to solve the situation at hand.

1. Egypt- About 7.4 billion SDRs.
2. Cote d’Ivoire- About 3.1 billion SDRs
3. Kenya- About 3.02 billion SDRs.
4. Angola- About 2.72 billion SDRs
5. Ghana- About 2.707 billion SDRs.
