Chief Executive Officer of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, is calling on Parliament to urgently pass a law on organ harvesting to make life-saving transplants more affordable for Ghanaians.
Speaking during an interaction with the Health Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, Dr. Seidu Adam revealed that the absence of a legal framework forces patients to travel abroad for procedures, even though Ghana has qualified specialists to perform them locally.
“As eye surgeons, we perform cornea transplants, but we cannot source corneas in Ghana. We currently import them from the United States at a minimum cost of $3,000 to $4,000. With legislation in place, we could harvest corneas here, reducing the cost to under GH₵500, ”he explained.
His appeal comes as pressure mounts on lawmakers to establish regulations for organ donation and harvesting a move health experts say will improve access to critical treatments and significantly cut costs for patients.
