President John Dramani Mahama has announced a bold ₵1 billion initiative to strengthen Ghana’s security architecture, pledging to retool and modernize key frontline agencies. The announcement came during his maiden media encounter on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at the Jubilee House.
The fund, according to the President, will be channeled into upgrading the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, and other emergency response agencies. Planned investments include the procurement of armored vehicles, modern fire tenders, and enhanced logistics to ensure swift responses to emergencies nationwide.
“Security is the backbone of national stability. By equipping our agencies with the right tools, we are safeguarding lives, property, and the future of our nation,” President Mahama stressed, underscoring his administration’s commitment to safety.
Journalists pressed the President on concerns over rising crime and delayed emergency responses. He admitted that many of the Fire Service’s engines were over a decade old, describing modernization as “an urgent necessity.”
Security institutions have welcomed the plan. A senior police officer described it as a “game-changer” that would ease operational bottlenecks, while Fire Service officials expressed optimism that new equipment would significantly improve their nationwide response to fire incidents.
Public reactions, however, remain divided. While many applauded the government’s renewed focus on safety, others voiced doubts over implementation. “We’ve heard promises before. What we need now is delivery and results,” a resident in Accra remarked.
