Ghana has documented a cumulative total of 1,038 confirmed Mpox cases, accompanied by eight fatalities as of March 3, 2026, since the onset of the outbreak in May 2025. The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, disclosed this while addressing Parliament, outlining the government’s proactive measures to contain the spread of the virus and safeguard public health.
The outbreak has permeated 124 districts nationwide, with the Greater Accra Region and Western Region emerging as the epicentres of the incidence. Nonetheless, the situation appears relatively stabilised, with a solitary patient currently undergoing treatment and no critical cases reported.
The Ministry, in conjunction with the Ghana Health Service and international partners, has orchestrated a cohesive multi-sectoral response to mitigate the spread of the virus. A notable development in this endeavour is the receipt of 33,600 Mpox vaccine doses from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization. To date, over 31,000 individuals have been vaccinated, denoting a commendable coverage rate of more than 95% in targeted areas.
Minister Akandoh reassured the public that the government is shouldering the medical expenses of affected individuals, thereby alleviating the financial burden on patients. The government’s interventions are geared towards protecting public health while ensuring accessible and efficient response measures for all.
