The Northern Regional Security Liaison Officer, RSM Adam Mohammed, has revealed that 13 women arrested for prostitution in Tamale were made to sweep parts of the central business district as a deterrent. The operation, which targeted areas like Jubilee Park and the Bank of Ghana stretch, aimed to clamp down on commercial sex work and drug-related activities in the city.
According to RSM Mohammed, the decision to engage the arrested women in cleaning activities was twofold – to serve as a cautionary measure and to contribute to the city’s sanitation efforts. The women were provided with brooms and other necessary equipment to facilitate the clean-up exercise. Some of the women reportedly welcomed the initiative, expressing remorse and vowing to desist from such activities.
The operation also led to the arrest of suspected drug peddlers, underscoring the region’s growing concern with substance abuse and trafficking. RSM Mohammed reaffirmed National Security’s commitment to enforcing the law without bias, warning that anyone found to have broken the law would face prosecution.
The action has elicited mixed reactions from residents, with some supporting the move as a deterrent and others questioning its effectiveness. RSM Mohammed emphasized that the security agencies would continue to intensify their efforts in combating prostitution and drug trafficking in the region.
