The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) is set to introduce a comprehensive digital traceability system to monitor the movement of gold from mines to export points. The initiative, which forms part of government’s strategy to formalize the gold sector, aims to curb smuggling, enhance transparency, and ensure responsible sourcing.

Announcing the plan at the Mining in Motion Summit in Accra, GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi said the system will leverage advanced technology, including blockchain, to track every gram of gold produced by licensed miners.

Our goal is to make Ghana a model of ethical and transparent gold trade, in line with global standards such as those of the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA),” he stated.

The traceability system is expected to go live by the end of 2025, with full nationwide implementation targeted for 2026. This rollout complements the government’s broader agenda to add value to the gold industry through the establishment of an ISO-certified assay laboratory, mini-refineries, and a gold jewelry manufacturing hub.

President John Dramani Mahama, who inaugurated a special task force in July to combat illegal mining and smuggling, emphasized that these reforms will safeguard Ghana’s mineral wealth and increase foreign exchange earnings. The President also reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to exporting refined gold products instead of raw bullion by 2026.

The Gold Board Bill, passed in March 2025, centralizes all gold purchases, sales, and exports under GoldBod’s oversight, prohibiting foreigners from trading artisanal gold. With these measures, Ghana aims to strengthen governance in the mining sector, ensure compliance with ethical sourcing standards, and position itself as a global leader in responsible gold production.
