The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has released provisional figures revealing a disturbing trend in road traffic crashes in Ghana. According to the data, a total of 2,949 lives were lost in 14,743 road crashes that occurred between January and December 2025. This represents a significant increase in road fatalities, with the number of deaths rising by 18.2% compared to the previous year.
The NRSA’s report highlights the growing concern of road safety in Ghana, with the number of crashes and vehicles involved also witnessing a substantial surge. A total of 24,938 vehicles were implicated in the crashes, marking an 8.5% increase from the previous year. Furthermore, the number of injuries rose by 7.1%, with 16,714 people sustaining injuries in the reported crashes.
Pedestrians remain one of the most vulnerable groups on Ghana’s roads, with 2,561 pedestrians being knocked down in traffic incidents in 2025. This represents a 7% increase from the previous year, underscoring the need for enhanced measures to protect pedestrians and other road users.
The NRSA’s findings have sparked renewed concerns about road safety enforcement, driver behavior, and the protection of vulnerable road users. As the country grapples with the rising toll of road crashes, it is imperative that stakeholders, including government agencies, law enforcement, and the public, come together to address this pressing issue.
The NRSA’s data serves as a stark reminder of the need for sustained efforts to improve road safety in Ghana. By working together, it is possible to reduce the incidence of road crashes and create a safer transportation environment for all road users.
